The Tata Group was founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868. His son, Dorabji Tata became the chairman in 1904 and later established the Tata Iron and Steel Company. Today, this company is referred to as Tata Steel. Sir Dorabji took the company internationally and expanded into London. Tata Power was India’s first hydro plant. Under JRD Tata’s chairmanship, the company’s assets grew by over 5 billion US dollars. In the following years, other companies that formed under the Group were Tata Airlines, Tata Motors and Tata Consultancy Services.
Ratan Tata became the chairman in 1991 during a year of economic liberalisation in India. Several companies acquired by the Tata Group are Tetley, Corus Group, Jaguar and Land Rover. The Group has over 7 lakh workers that are present across 100 countries.
