You will be responsible for cross-team collaboration to ensure and enable the delivery of new applications and business functions to VMware businesses and customers. Delivering complex business solutions in an efficient, secure, and resilient manner such that they enable our customers to achieve their goals will be the focus area. You will be part of a team of individual contributors that are technically strong, agile, and innovative. 

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

Build, test, and deploy are primary functions of release management supporting the delivery of business functions to VMware customers. In this journey, you will  

In the first 6 months:

  • Develop a good understanding of our team and our technical capabilities and solutions, their strengths, and weaknesses 
  • Understand the team’s challenges 
  • Get a good understanding of our infrastructure and applications landscapes, systems and services, tech stacks, and key business processes 

6 - 12 months and beyond:

  • Learn how to provide secure, efficient, and resilient deployment solutions to our stakeholders 
  • Directly impact developer productivity by enabling standardized testing and zero-touch deployment capabilities 
  • Improve capacity utilization and self-service capabilities of our deployment solutions as we actively participate in our SaaS transformation story 
  • Influence continuous improvement of our capabilities by charting key metrics, and reporting and closing the loop on feature requests 

Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing regularly?

As a release engineer, you will perform:

  • Deployments of VMware IT systems/software's/tools to on-Prem and cloud environments – requires flexibility about working hours, good knowledge of Software Development LifeCycle, waterfall/ agile/ Continuous Delivery models, and desire to work on & learn new technologies 
  • vRCS and other automation tools administration and management 
  • Deployments on Docker, Kubernetes, BI, Oracle EBS, Fusion middleware, Cloud Foundry, AWS, GCP, MS Azure, VMC, Tomcat and Liferay Servers, microservices, Kong, Apache, Kafka, Oracle DB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL 
  • Daily/Weekly/monthly releases – requires good communication skills, ability to multi-task and work under stringent deadlines, ability to speak at appropriate technical and business levels based on the audience, and ability to prepare written proposals and recommendations 
  • Deployments to SFDC and SAP production deployments 
  • Post-release triage of issue - requires the ability to understand and work on various internal systems like Linux, Windows, Mac, Horizon View, and various technologies described above 
  • Cross-platform deployments needing expertise in identifying and resolving integration issues 
  • Coordination of system-level and integration level testing – requires strong quality assurance background 
  • Troubleshooting of automated testing products, set up of automated testing, automated test scripts, creation of automated regression test suites 
  • Deployments following established continuous integration practices – requires knowledge of best practices in release automation in the Agile/CICD world 
  • Practice of Release and Deployment Management processes specified by the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) at the Foundation level – requires in-depth knowledge of IT end-to-end Change and Release management process 

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

This position reports to the Manager of the IT Release Team, a VMware veteran who has been a software engineer. The team consists of highly competent, passionate engineers. We focus on the iterative development of our deployment solutions, VMware’s packaged software, and our deployment practices. 

You will be part of an established team that has a wide range of responsibilities, spanning the entire software stack. This is a great opportunity for someone who likes a broad range of responsibilities and is comfortable in providing high availability services relied upon by your stakeholders.
