What it does

British Petroleum (BP) is an oil and gas company headquartered in London, England. It is one of the world's seven oil and gas "supermajors". It is a vertically integrated company operating in all areas of the oil and gas industry, including exploration and extraction, refining, distribution and marketing, power generation, and trading. BP is a global energy business with over 100 years of experience across the value chain.

Our purpose is reimagining energy for people and our planet. We want to help the world reach net zero and improve people’s lives. We will aim to dramatically reduce carbon in our operations and our products, and grow new low-carbon businesses, products, and services.

We want to be an energy company with a purpose; one that is trusted by society, valued by shareholders, and motivating for everyone who works at BP. We believe we have the experience and expertise, the relationships and the reach, the skill and the will, to do this.

Mission

Our ambition is to be a net-zero company by 2050 or sooner and to help the world get to net zero.

The BP story

Starting in 1908 with the discovery of oil in Persia, their story has always been about transitions – from coal to oil, from oil to gas, from onshore to deep water, and now onwards towards a new mix of energy sources as the world moves into a lower carbon future

  • First oil – 1901-1908 - The smell was unmistakable. It was a smell you could see. The vapors rose clearly in the sunlight, and stank of rotten eggs. But to the explorer George Reynolds it was the best thing he had smelled in seven years. He instructed the men to keep drilling
  • Early history – 1909-1924 -To find oil in Persia, George Reynolds and his caravan of explorers had lived through seven years of harsh heat, gastric illnesses, and disappointments. The next seven years would be no less difficult for the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, which would one day become BP
  • Through World War II – 1925-1945 -No longer the novelty ‘horseless carriages’ of old, cars flooded onto the streets of Europe and the United States in the 1920s and 30s. Bp-labeled gasoline pumps appeared around Britain, often flying little Union Jacks as a patriotic flourish. There were 69 pumps in 1921, over 6,000 by 1925
  • Post-war – 1946-1970 -Like many companies, Anglo-Iranian, which would later become BP, lost a lot in World War II. But like many companies, it also gained the resolve it needed to keep moving forward
  • Late century – 1971-1999 -Like many companies, Anglo-Iranian, which would later become BP, lost a lot in World War II. But like many companies, it also gained the resolve it needed to keep moving forward
  • The new millennium – 2000-2012 -With the new millennium came a new focus for the company – within the first five years it had changed its name to BP, set its sights on newer assets, and established an alternative and low carbon energy business

Culture and vibe

From the people who chart our course to those who put our plans into action, BP is an exciting place to be for anyone who wants to be part of the global energy business

Diversity, equity & inclusion

We are a global business and as such, it is paramount to us that the differences we see in the world around us are reflected in our workplace. But this alone is not enough. For a diverse workforce to thrive, we need inclusion, having a culture where everyone is valued and plays their part in building the success of our business.

To achieve this, we are building a diverse workforce by consciously attracting the best people to BP.

  • Accessibility - we strive to provide an accessible work environment for everyone.
  • Ethnicity - We aim to attract the best employees, no matter where they come from.
  • Flexible working -We believe that flexible working benefits you and our business.
  • Gender -Having a better gender balance in our workforce is a key priority, as we seek to rebalance our employee base for the benefit of us all.
  • LGBT+ - We’re proud to be a business where everyone can be themselves, regardless of sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
