What it does: The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to saving lives, reducing the burden of disease and strengthening integrated health systems in low- and middle-income countries where we work.

Mission: CHAI's mission is to save lives and reduce the burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries around the world. We aim to strengthen the government and private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems in the countries where we work.

The CHAI story

CHAI was founded in 2002 with a transformational goal: to help save the lives of millions of people living with HIV/AIDS. Today, CHAI operates in 36 countries across the world and more than 80 countries have access to CHAI-negotiated price reductions, vaccines, medical devices, and diagnostics. Current programs at CHAI include HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis, Maternal, Newborn and Reproductive Health, Diarrhea and Pneumonia, Nutrition, Vaccines, Health Financing, Health Workforce, and Cancer. CHAI also has a number of experts working across the organization to help shape global markets, negotiate lower prices for drugs and health tools, provide clinical support and knowledge, and utilize the latest and best data and analytics to shape decision-making.

CHAI has been working in India since 2004, supporting the government across 13 states to expand access to prevention, diagnosis, management, and treatment services across critical healthcare needs. These include COVID-19; hepatitis; HIV/AIDS; syphilis; tuberculosis; vector-borne diseases; antimicrobial resistance; cancer; childhood diarrhea and pneumonia and improving oxygen access; maternal, child, and reproductive health; anemia; immunization; nutrition and safe drinking water; health financing, and disease surveillance.

Over the last two decades, CHAI’s support has focused on program design and planning; behavioural change communication; data analytics; review and governance, research and evidence generation; supply chain management; policy research; capacity building; drugs, devices, and commodities; monitoring and evaluation; inter-agency coordination, and private sector engagement.

Since March 2020, we have assisted the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Department of Health Research (DHR) to rapidly scale-up testing capacity for COVID-19. CHAI has assisted multiple states including Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, to respond to the pandemic by harmonizing data systems to improve decision making, supply chain and case management, and introduce and scale-up COVID-19 vaccinations. During the pandemic’s peak, CHAI also supported the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and select states to improve access to oxygen and assist the health system to meet patient demand. CHAI continues to extend its support to national and state-level government agencies to holistically strengthen the COVID-19 response including testing, treatment, vaccination, and surveillance and prepare for future outbreaks.
