What it does: Hexaware Technologies concentrates on transformative IT products and services to ‘automate and cloudify everything’.

Mission: To be competitive and proactive in providing software solutions to customers by continuously striving to exceed their expectations.

Size and presence: Around 19,000+ globally over 37 offices.

Best known for: Hexaware is the fastest growing next-generation provider of IT, BPO, and consulting services. Our focus lies on taking a leadership position in helping our clients attain customer intimacy as their competitive advantage.

The good bits: Workplace culture and environment are both excellent. The management is open and honest, and the teammates are supportive. For entertainment, there is a large cafeteria and a gaming arcade. Every year, the company's policies are good, the appraisals are fair, and they provide a good salary increase and bonus.

The not so good bits: Corporate politics exist. Salary is decent but career growth is slow. There is a bond of 2 years before which you cannot resign. On-the-job training is seldomly given to new joiners.

The Hexaware Technologies Story

Atul Nishar established Aptech Information Systems in 1990 following a spin-off of Apple Industries in 1984. By 2001, Aptech Information Systems changed its name to Hexaware Technologies Limited.

The company achieved significant growth during those years, posting an increase in revenues from $50 million to $250 million within a decade.

Hexaware Technologies primarily focuses on the business process outsourcing, consulting, and IT sectors—aiming to ‘automate and cloudify everything’ in several industries such as:

  • Banking and financial services
  • Healthcare
  • Insurance
  • Manufacturing; and
  • Transportation.

The company has employed more than 19,000 people in 37 global offices, including its headquarters in Navi Mumbai. Employees also work in Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Khapri, Noida, and Pune.

Culture & vibe

Freshers can expect a diverse and inclusive workplace environment at the company that’s bolstered by initiatives like the #WeDifferent program. Hexaware Technologies. More women have also joined the company even if men still dominate the employee headcount.

From more than 3,200 female employees in 2015, the number almost doubled in 2019. Over 6,200 female employees joined Hexaware Technologies during that year.

Despite a steep corporate hierarchy on paper, Hexaware Technologies tries to strike a balance between a customer-centric and employee-driven work environment.

Freshers should think carefully if they want to be long-term employees. Once candidates accept a job offer, the company expects them to stay for a certain time. In other words, freshers simply can’t change their minds if they want to receive a full salary.

Recruitment process

Hexaware Technologies generally screens candidates through an online test, and technical and HR interviews. The online test usually has four parts:

  1. Communication test (eg grammar, listening, reading, and writing skills)
  2. Quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning
  3. Computer programming (eg programming languages, operating systems)
  4. Personality assessment

The company’s Mavericks Program for engineering graduates may have a different hiring process. Freshers should still anticipate several interviews with a lot of specific questions:

Technical interview

  • What are the differences between C++ and C?
  • What does inheritance mean?
  • How do you define an abstract class?
  • What is the best strategy for achieving project goals?
  • How is a package different from an interface?

HR interview

  • How would you rate my interviewing skills?
  • What does Hexaware Technologies do?
  • What would you do if you won the lottery?

A final interview with the department head marks the end of the selection process. Hexaware Technologies may take up to 15 days to choose the best candidate. Selected individuals must be determined to work for at least two years at the company.

Insiders said that there’s a service agreement for certain roles such as graduate engineering trainees. The employment bond’s duration becomes longer for higher positions within the company.

Career prospects

Engineering and tech graduates have more choices for a career path at Hexaware Technologies. Aside from the Mavericks Program, freshers can choose to transition into a new role via lateral transfers.

An employee normally becomes a senior in their roles to signify a promotion. The actual job title depends on the position, although the corporate hierarchy looks like this:

  1. Graduate trainee
  2. Associate software engineer
  3. Analyst/software engineer
  4. Senior software engineer.
  5. Systems analyst
  6. Senior systems analyst
  7. Technical architect
  8. Senior technical architect
  9. Senior consultant
  10. Principal consultant

If employees pursue a management role, they can become project directors or simply managers to designated teams. The top-level management group includes vice presidents, senior vice presidents, and executive vice presidents.

Remuneration

Graduate engineering trainees earn INR350,000 per year after they successfully complete the training. The rate is on par with the average salary for an entry-level engineer in India, although it’s lower than some IT companies.

Software engineers at Hexaware Technologies earn approximately INR385,000 per year. Senior software engineers earn twice as much per year. Company-wide benefits include:

  • 21 earned leave credits
  • Extra pay for holiday or weekend work
  • Free educational courses (eg Udemy);
  • Travel allowance for food, lodging, and transportation.

Insiders at the company also said that there’s a ‘Golden Handshake’ policy for exiting employees. If they don’t go on leave during their notice period for resignation, Hexaware Technologies will release their Full and Final Settlement on their last day at the company.

Controversies

In 2013, the company probed an unnamed official’s foreign exchange transactions. Hexaware described the transactions as ‘actively concealed and potentially fraudulent.
