The Jindal Steel & Power Story

Jindal Steel & Power Limited (JSPL) was incorporated in 1979 as part of the O.P. Jindal Group, which is currently valued at USD 22 billion. In 1995, the company tapped into the power sector with the name ‘Jindal Power LTD’. Since it’s inception, the company has been constantly scaling its capacity and improving efficiencies to capture opportunities. JSPL is currently led by Mr Sudhanshu Saraf, who succeded N.A. Ansari. JSPL manufactures and sells mild steel slabs, sponge iron, ferrochrome, mild steel, iron ore, structural, mild steel, coils & coal-based sponge iron plant, and hot-rolled plates.

The company is expanding globally with a sight of becoming a leading transnational business group. JSPL also operates an integrated steel complex in Sohar, Oman, a coal mining operation in Australia and also operates in South Africa and Mozambique. The export portfolio of JSPL is increasing with its existing footprint in 22 countries.

The Recruitment Process

JSPL focuses its recruitment on fresh talent. Under the Graduate Engineers Training Programme (GET), the company hires fresh engineers for entry-level positions. GET was introduced to identify potential young engineers who could be trained to align with the JSPL work standards and methodology. JSPL conducted the first All India GET in 2007 and hired 125 fresh engineer graduates across four disciplines: Electrical, Mechanical, Metallurgical, and Instrumentation & Control (I&C).

This is what you should expect during the JSPL recruitment process:

  1. A written test includes an aptitude test and domain-specific written test. There is no negative marking of this test.

  2. In the group discussion round, the candidates are provided with the topics that are currently trending in the industry. The candidates’ communication skills are tested in this round.

  3. The personal interview includes both technical and HR interviews.

  4. A physical fitness assessment is required for candidates who make it through the previous rounds.

During their first days, graduates are familiarised with organisational values, culture, quality procedures and systems. Graduates are also taken through important awareness training for safety procedures. All graduate engineer trainees undergo three-months of structured classroom training during which they are trained in behavioural skills such as communication skills, team building, attitude transformation, problem-solving and decision making.

Career Prospects

Graduate Engineer Trainees (GET) can expect to reach the director level after twenty years. Quick promotions, significant salary increments and training initiatives have helped JSPL in keeping their attrition low. Due to work environments similar to the public sector (PSU) and above-average remuneration, retention is high. The retention rate of employees in JSPL is backed up by frequent employee training programs and quick promotions. JSPL provides 40hrs of training to its employees per annum and has a 30% promotion rate. The average increment rate stood at 21% for the last three years.

Remuneration

Entry-level engineering graduates hired through GET receive around INR 546-699k per year. In addition, the company provides hospitals, schools and residential facilities for its employees, as well as medical claims, leave travel allowances (LTA), gratuity and more.

The Culture

JSPL is considered to be an excellent place to work as it gives its employees an opportunity to try their hands on multiple roles and departments. As per employee reviews, periodic training and involvement in the decision-making process keep the work environment healthy. Employees also stated that they have opportunities to work in areas outside of their domain which makes them a valuable asset to the organisation.

Social Contributions

The JSPL Foundation is the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) arm of Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. JSPL foundation received the 2018 CST excellence award at the India International CSR conclave. The foundation has been recognised for its contribution to skill development across the nation. OP Jindal Community College in Chattisgarh, Odisha, and Jharkhand are the arms of JSPL foundation, which operate via their decentralised initiatives to develop rural human resources.

Vibe of the Place

JSPL offers a career-building work environment where an employee is considered a long-term partner. The company offers the best in class salaries and career growth opportunities.

The company maintains a culture where an employee is literally considered a stakeholder. Though due to the downfall in the steel industry, JSPL may not be able to remunerate its staff as it used to.
