The Teva Pharmaceuticals story

Established in Jerusalem in 1901, the company known today as Teva starts as a small wholesale drug business that distributes imported medications, we have aimed to help patients live longer, healthier lives. As we work to find solutions to tomorrow’s biggest healthcare challenges, we look back with pride at our humble beginnings and past accomplishments.

When, over a century ago, Chaim Salomon, Moshe Levin, and Yitschak Elstein came together in Jerusalem to form a small pharmaceutical business, they could not have imagined that their company would go on to be a world leader in the industry.

Today Teva offers the world's largest medicine cabinet, providing medicines to about 200 million people around the world every day. With one of the most competitive operational networks in the industry, Teva now produces 1,800 unique molecules and a portfolio of 3,500 products, spanning generics, specialty, and over-the-counter medicines. From our humble beginnings to shaping the worldwide generic medicine industry, we are now embarking on a new biopharmaceutical journey. Much has changed in healthcare since Teva was established over a century ago. But what has remained consistent is our deeply-rooted desire to offer accessible and innovative ways to help people live healthier lives.

Culture & vibe

Conducting business with integrity and transparency is non-negotiable for Teva. Our compliance vision is for business to be gained the right way, not by any means necessary. As our Chief Compliance Officer says, "What we do is important, but how we do it is just as important. Let’s continue to do business the right way, the ethical way…our way.”

Robust Governance: At Teva, compliance, and ethics are everyone’s responsibility. Over the last six years, Teva has strengthened our compliance and ethics program across the globe, with an emphasis on policies, training, and support that meets the business in areas related to compliance.

Guiding Policies and Code of Conduct: One of how we cultivate a culture of compliance and accountability is by ensuring our values are reflected in our policies and procedures. Primary among these is Teva’s Code of Conduct, which outlines our values and foundational compliance and ethics expectations for all employees. Equally important is Teva’s Policy on the Prevention of Corruption, which details Teva’s anti-corruption and anti-kickback approaches, guiding how we collaborate and interact with other members of the healthcare ecosystem.

Strategic Compliance Training: Our risk-based global compliance training and communications program strategically assigns risks to each role at Teva, and employees receive relevant compliance training. Upon hiring, each employee receives extensive Code of Conduct training, followed by refreshers and updated every three years.

Fostering a Culture of Compliance: We strive to create a culture of integrity and compliance throughout our company. Our Board members and senior management communicate frequently about the importance of doing work with integrity and gaining business the right way. Our training is designed to foster an appreciation of the responsibility everyone shares, not only to do the right thing but to speak up if they see something wrong.

Compliance Systems and Processes: An effective compliance program requires more than just individual integrity; it also requires the tools necessary to translate that integrity into an effective system of controls. Our compliance processes and systems help identify potential indicators of risk in our day-to-day business and mitigate them, as appropriate.

Addressing Compliance Issues: We are committed to conducting business ethically and responsibly. In cases of missteps or perceived missteps, we revisit our processes and seek to strengthen our compliance mechanisms to reduce risks. Central to our ability to address these concerns is our Office of Business Integrity (OBI), which operates our global compliance hotlines and investigates all allegations of misconduct. The OBI empowers employees to speak up on issues of potential concern and provides us with important information to address concerns.

Social Contributions

As a company in the business of improving health, Teva is committed to building partnerships in pursuit of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. At its core are 17 SDGs, constituting a universal call for actions aimed at ending poverty, protecting the planet, and ensuring all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

We minimize our impact on climate change through reduced greenhouse gas emissions, including reductions in energy use, and overall increased use of renewable energy.

We collaborate and establish ongoing partnerships with non-profit organizations, governments, healthcare providers, industry peers, and patient organizations to expand the reach of our insights and resources and develop multi-stakeholder solutions to pressing health challenges.

We believe medicine should always be accessible, and we work to help make this a reality. We are working with Texas Children’s Hospital’s Global HOPE (Hematology-Oncology Pediatric Excellence), a non-profit that takes a sustainable approach to treat children with cancer and blood disorders by providing needed care and strengthening local healthcare services, and Direct Relief, an organization that provides medical resources for the world’s most vulnerable people.

Our partnership initially launched in Malawi, and after seeing its success, we expanded to Uganda and Botswana. Now, we’re growing the program to reach even more children across Africa and Eastern Europe.
